Popis: | Data have been presented relating an epidemic of streptococcal infection associated with a high incidence of rheumatic fever in a community to a follow-up period in which bacteriological and immunological data were obtained from the same community. Although the carrier rates of Group A streptococci diminished slightly between these two periods, the most striking observation was the disappearance of an epidemic Group A, Type 5 from the school population. A significant decrease in ASO was noted in this same population between the two sampling periods, which were 1 year apart, despite the fact that 58% of the effective participants acquired Group A streptococci during an endemic year with no resulting rheumatic fever. Previously described criteria for prediction of an epidemic were applied to both periods and were found to be valid. Recommendations for civilian mass prophylaxis may still be made on the basis of these criteria. |
