Aim This preliminary investigation enquires whether unplanned expenses cause concern for parents who travel long distances to visit their sick baby in a tertiary centre after surgery. Method Ethical approval was granted, allowing consent to be obtained from a small sample of 11 parents for entry into the study. Data collection was by a non-experimental approach by a prospective parental questionnaire and a retrospective review of the nursing and medical notes to identify postoperative complications and length of hospital stay. Result Concerns were raised regarding unplanned expenses particularly related to buying extra petrol, food and drinks at the hospital and an increase in their telephone bill. A retrospective review of the notes identified a host of varied post operative complications which would be highlighted as potential problems should the babies be transferred early to their local hospital. Recommendations To look closely at the postoperative complications to identify areas for development, and investment into surgical support and education for local neonatal units and children's wards when a baby was transferred. |
