Applying automatic control methods in irrigation channels is a way to improve the management of irrigation systems. The difficulties involved by these hydraulic systems such as non-linearities, delays and uncontrolled perturbations make the choice of a suitable automatic control a challenge. To this purpose, this paper intends to investigate the applicability of control strategies which would be able to compensate the time delay, could adjust the physical behaviour of the channel to different operating points and overcome the system non-linearities. The proposed method is based on an adaptive version of the Generalized Predictive Control technique. Firstly, we expose the basic principles of the later. Then, we are interested in the application of this method to a single reach channel and we extend it to the case of two reachs separated by a cross-gate. Tlie objective is to regulate the downstream water level in the channel by controlling both the upstream discharges and the gate opening. |
