Nicaragua is a country that has lost its way politically. The Revolution awakened hope and led to a mobilization of resources to address pressing problems. A daunting array of problems overwhelmed the Revolution. When the Sandinistas were voted out of power in open, competitive elections, new governors professed alternative strategies but were consumed by in-fighting and distracting by lining their pockets with ill-gotten gains. A Sandinista comandante returned to the presidency, but in time revealed that he, too, was an opportunist, and the country began to take on an eerie resemblance to the former Somoza regime. Nicaragua contemporary history is that of a dispirited circle of politics, illustrating a bankruptcy of political—and moral—leadership that is all too common today in the poorer countries of the world. |
