The Gwent Levels appear to have been actively drained in Roman times. This paper reviews the use of the levels for pasture and grazing and arable agriculture in the light of recent work along the line of the South East Coastal Strategy Pipeline. The palaeoenvironmental evidence from a number of sites on the Caldicot levels suggests principally a use for pasture whereas arable agriculture appears to be focused on the higher hinterland along the margins. The effectiveness and nature of the Roman sea defences is reviewed and circumstantial evidence allows conclusions to be drawn about the presence of sea walls and their likely engineering characteristics.
