Unhealthy marital relationships have been found to have negative impacts on spouses? physical and mental well-being. Much of the research investigating the impact of marital health on individual well-being has utilized unidimensional measures of marital satisfaction that do not account for spouses? ability to hold both positive and negative attitudes and emotions about their relationship. Ambivalence is quite common and is understudied in romantic relationships. Initial research suggests that ambivalence in relationships has negative impacts on physical health. Therefore, the current study investigated the impact of emotional ambivalence on spouses? depression, well-being, and relationship stability. Results revealed that higher ambivalence was associated with higher levels of depression and lower levels of well-being. There was mixed evidence for relationship instability with some models indicating a positive relationship between ambivalence and relationship instability and others with non-significant findings. These results highlight the importance of accounting for ambivalence in future research on relationships. |
