Data have been obtained on the 54Fe(3He, t) reaction at 37.7 MeV with emphasis on the (1 f 1 2 ) −2 states of 54Co. The experimental angular distributions were compared to calculations fone assuming various reactions channels. Two-step (3He, 3He′)(3He′, t) and (3He, t)(t, t′) transitions through the 2+ and 4+ levels in the target and residual nuclei were found to contribute significantly to the transition. When exchange contributions were also included in the charge exchange transitions the previously observed J-dependence of the interaction potential was essentially removed. It is apparent that these contributions, along with the (3He, α)(α, t) and (3He, d)(d, t) sequential transfer processes should be considered in future studies of the (3He, t) reaction. Inelastic two-step processes do not contribute in an important way to the excitation of the 1+, 3+, 5+ and 7+ states. |
