The purpose of this study is the materials characterization and the stratigraphic analysis of a post-Byzantine portable icon which is a typical stylistic example of Northern Greece folk art. The icon which depicts a variation of Deisis, dates from the late 17th century and was found in the village Kaksos, Northern Greece. The collected samples were examined by means of microscopic and spectroscopic methods: Optical and UV Fluorescence Microscopy, micro Fourier Infrared Spectroscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy. The complemental analysis showed the presence of traditional materials and applied techniques. A quite plain painting palette was identified, including white, black, red, brown and green colors. The presence of textile support between the wooden substrate and the ground layers, the use of golden leaf for the gilding and the identification of the precious pigment cinnabar are signs of the materials quality of the artifact, despite its folk art origin. This study aims to contribute to the documentation of materials and techniques of the post-Byzantine Central and Northern Greece ecclesiastical artistic guilds. |
