This study aims to examine whether trauma exposure influences approach-avoidance conflict resolution. Further, it will examine whether trauma exposure or specific types of trauma exposure change how individuals approach reward when negative stimuli are also present. This study also aims to examine the factors that moderate the relation between trauma exposure and approach-avoidance conflict resolution. We are interested in the extent to which emotion regulation abilities moderate the association between trauma exposure and approach-avoidance conflict resolution. Given that the study data are being collected in the context of a global pandemic, we will examine the role of pandemic adversity in the trauma-related approach-avoidance conflict as an exploratory aim. Another exploratory aim of this study is to examine the relation between internalizing symptoms (e.g., anxiety, depression) and approach-avoidance conflict resolution. Internalizing symptoms are often related, and internalizing diagnoses are often comorbid. Dimensional approaches to psychopathology indicate a hierarchical structure of internalizing symptoms. Though trauma exposure is most commonly studied in the context of PTSD, trauma is associated with elevated risk for a variety of psychiatric symptoms. We will examine the clustering of internalizing symptoms and how they relate to trauma exposure. We will examine the clusters as predictors of task performance and approach-avoidance conflict resolution. |
