Biologists are now able to investigate intricate biological systems by exploring the most fundamental source of biological information – the genome. In the last decades, there has been tremendous advance in sequencing and analyzing genomes from diverse organisms. Comparative analyses between genomes from different species provide a powerful strategy to understand how genomes function and evolve. Here, we argue that studying the origin of new genes can shed light on fundamental evolutionary questions. We illustrate this point by summarizing studies of new genes implicated in basic cellular processes, such as regulatory networks, cell division, and protein traffic. |
