Wisdom is often seen as the ability to reason well about complex and uncertain situations. But how do people mentally represent such situations in the first place? To answer this question, we developed and validated a new scale (SACCS) that captures two dimensions of mental representation: abstractness and concreteness. We also linked these dimensions to four facets of wisdom: intellectual humility, open-mindedness, perspective taking, and compromise seeking. Using data from two studies with North American and UK participants (total N = 1151), we discovered that both abstract and concrete construals independently contributed to wiser reasoning, even after accounting for other factors. Moreover, we explored how people balance and switch between construals at different levels of analysis (trait vs. state) and found that this skill was related to higher wisdom, especially for trait-level processes. Our findings have important implications for understanding how construals shape wisdom across different contexts. |
