Popis:	These are trying times for universities everywhere. The new era of mass education and escalating costs has imposed conflicting demands on universities that cannot possibly be accommodated without compromizing the central features university education, namely the pursuit of learning, independent research, intellectual curiosity and the traditional atmosphere of academic freedom. These demands have also posed a dilemma for our political paymasters, who are faced with growing public demand for costly higher education, and for our universities, who wish to maintain standards. But are academics merely defending effete traditions through blatant self-interest?
