The current study aims to replicate and expand on the Corrigan, Hannah, and Dyer (2020) analogue stress study. Corrigan et al. (2020) had participants watch a safety video developed by the fire service in the United Kingdom. Drawing on immersive virtual reality (VR) technology, it involved participants being a passenger in a car what was in an accident with a tractor, and how rescue services got passengers out. It was used in the study to act as an analogue for distressing experiences, and the work follows other analogue distress studies common in the literature. Corrigan et al. found that trait dissociation before exposure to distress significantly predicted data-driven processing during trauma. Moreover, they found that trait dissociation can influence memory disintegration and may predict attention changes after exposure to distress. The current study will expand on this study by exploring state dissociation and trait shame as predictors of distress-induced data-driven processing using the same analogue VR methodology. This study offers clarification on the theoretical models on which clinical practice is based. |
