Acoustic sounds generated by flows around a circular cylinder are simulated by direct numerical simulations. The two-dimensional, unsteady, compressible Navier-Stokes equations are solved by a finite difference method. The results show that the acoustic sounds are produced and propagate in the radial direction at the same frequency as the vortex shedding. In a far field, the peaks of the sound pressure decay in inverse proportion to the square-root of the distance from the center of the cylinder. |
