Patients with univentricular physiology or single-ventricle anatomy are unique. This population experiences an increased likelihood of needing extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) during their lifetime. Due to the expansive nature of this topic, the chapter primarily uses patients with hypoplastic left heart syndrome who are status post–stage 1 palliation (Norwood with modified Blalock-Taussig shunt or right ventricle–to–pulmonary artery conduit) as an example. The chapter briefly mentions stage 2 (bidirectional Glenn) and stage 3 palliations (extracardiac Fontan). The chapter focuses on what univentricular physiology entails, management of patients with univentricular physiology on ECMO, and complications unique to this patient population. |
