Popis: | A positive test for urine protein is probably the most-common laboratory finding of renal disease. Often, the type and severity of underlying disease is obvious from the accompanying signs and symptoms. For example, some patients present with the classic manifestations of nephrotic syndrome (edema, hypoalbuminemia, hypercholesterolemia, proteinuria, and lipiduria). Others develop nephritic manifestations such as hematuria, hypertension, and red cell casts in the urine. However, more often, the proteinuria is found incidentally during a routine urinalysis (isolated proteinuria). The challenge is to differentiate this condition from the patient with proteinuria secondary to renal disease. The distinction becomes very important because most of the patients with isolated proteinuria can be dealt with by the primary care physician. This article presents a simple and cost-effective approach for the evaluation and diagnosis of patients who have proteinuria. |
