An assessment of stereological techniques with application to the martensite transformation

Popis: The sampling errors of three stereological measurements—point count, lineal intercept count, and areal point count—on the plate martensite structure in a commercial 01 tool steel and a polycrystalline Fe-1.4 wt.% C-0.02 wt.% P alloy were determined and compared with Hilliard's theoretical predictions. The observed standard errors were found to agree very well with the theoretical value for all three measurements provided that the measured microstructural features are randomly distributed. The theoretical model underestimates the true standard error when deviation from random distribution of microstructure is present.
