In a recent paper by Cook et al. [Hydrometallurgy, 22 (1989) 171–182] the adsorption products of KAu(CN) 2 in solution onto activated carbon and carbon black were examined using microanalysis and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The XPS results are pivotal to the conclusions drawn yet they contain several unrecognized problems in the evaluation of the data. The incorrect static charge shift corrections and an erroneous spectrometer calibration are rectified, but the extent of the data presented remains inadequate to support the main conclusions. |
