Magnetic properties of novel LaFe13−xGaxC compounds

Popis: The magnetic properties of the novel intermetallic LaFe 13− x Ga x C compounds (2.75⩽ x ⩽6.5) have been studied. In a compound with x =6.5 the mictomagnetic state is observed. Upon decreasing the Ga concentration below x =6.5, the compounds are soft ferromagnets but for 4.5⩽ x ⩽6 the transition to the reentrant mictomagnetic state takes place at low temperatures. The saturation magnetic moment per Fe atom varies linearly from 1.61 μ B for x =4.5 to 1.89 μ B for x =2.75. The Curie temperature rises from 115 K for x =6 to 411 K for x =3.35 and further remains constant to x =2.75. The ferromagnetic state is unstable with respect to the antiferromagnetic Fe–Ga–Fe indirect exchange with increasing the Ga concentration and with respect to the direct antiferromagnetic exchange arising from the high coordination number of the Fe atoms in the low-aluminum-concentration range.
