Mongolia has a large population of young people: more than 50% are children and adolescents, who are the most susceptible to tobacco advertising. Smoking is the main cause of death in the country, causing two-thirds of all deaths among people over the age of 40. We have therefore undertaken a broad programme of research to determine attitudes to smoking and to identify target groups for tobacco control. The main purposes of this study were to conduct surveillance among young people to obtain baseline data, to study the conditions leading to smoking, to establish the main causes of smoking among students and to study the main diseases in smokers and non-smokers. |
