Popis: | INTRODUCTIONComplex formation between an imidazole group andmetal ions plays an important role in both molecularbiology and technology.1 Particularly interesting seemto be neutral platinum(II) and platinum(IV) complexes, which are the analogues of the anticancer drug cisplatin. The recently synthesized2,3 imidazoleEplatinum com-plexes had promising cytotoxic properties as assessedby the NCI preclinical antitumor drug discoveryscreen.2 These complexes, of general formula Pt(L)2X2or where LPt(L) \1-propylimidazole, 1-2X4,ethylimidazole and X\Cl, Br, I (Fig. 1), have beenintensively studied with the aim of Ðnding the relation-ship between cytotoxic activity and some structuralparameters characterizing the molecule. The primaryrole in modulating the inhibitory e†ect seems to beplayed by hydrophobic properties connected with thelength of the alkyl chain attached to N-1 of the imid-azole ring in these complexes.2We believe, however, that the more general informa-tion associated with structureEactivity relationshipsmay be obtained from spectroscopic analysis of cyto-toxic platinum complexes. Without laser excitation inthe near-infrared region it was not possible to recordRaman spectra of Br and I derivatives of the synthe-sized imidazole complexes. With an ND:YAG laserand the high sensitivity of a Fourier transform (FT)Raman spectrometer it was possible to measure the |
