A comparison is made of the results of three methods to obtain directional wave spectra, viz. one method using the measurements of three orthogonal subsurface velocity components and two methods using the measurements of the surface elevations at three positions: the slope array method and the space array method. The limitations of the three methods are determined mathematically and compared with the results of field measurements, which measurements are also used to intercompare the three methods. The results show that the method using the three orthogonal subsurface velocity components is suitable for the calculation of wave directional parameters in the high-energy frequency range of the sea spectrum and that the slope and the space array methods can be used for the calculation of the main wave direction of the lower frequency components (f≤0.14 Hz) but that these two methods are too sensitive to inaccuracies of the gauges to calculate the wave directional spread. |
