The power deposited by a 20 MW beam of 2 GeV protons has been calculated for a Liquid Mercury Target. Beam size and shape critically influence the deposited power density. A principle limitation of the liquid metal is in the temperature range that can be considered should boiling be avoided while operating at a relatively high repetition rate (>50 Hz ) . This has a limiting effect on the power that can be dissipated by the target. |
