Popis: | Phthitia Enderlein, 1938 (Diptera: Sphaeroceridae) is a cosmopolitan genus common throughout New Zealand, where it is often associated with moist, decaying vegetation. New data on species distributions and habitat associations are presented based on the examination of over 2000 specimens of Phthitia collected from the North and South Islands. Descriptions of two new species, Phthitia plesiocercus and Phthitia emarginata, are given along with a dichotomous key to the seven species of Pthitia now known to occur in New Zealand. Both of the newly described species belong to an endemic New Zealand clade. Phthitia plesiocercus appears to be associated with deposits of decomposing freshwater algae and most specimens were taken on or near lake shorelines. Phthitia emarginata was collected exclusively in traps baited with rotted Agaricus mushrooms in woodlands towards the east of the South Island. |
