Popis: Regional aeromagnetic anomaly maps of southwest England produced by upward continuation, trend surface analysis and low-pass wavenumber filtering of the published aeromagnetic map show a pronounced gradient zone of an east-west trend crossing central Devon. Across a 60-km-wide zone, regional field values reduce southwards by about 150 nT. This gradient zone can be modelled as the edge effect of a 6-km-thick permanently magnetised layer at the base of the crust. A dense layer of similar geometry can explain the high regional gravity field that characterises southwest England.
