Popis: Assuming a speech understanding system that predicts words, a crucial part of such a system is that part which associates a given word with its acoustic manifestation. In the system implemented at the System Development Corporation, this process is called mapping. It can be viewed as a set of transformations between successive levels of representation, some conceptual and some real. Predictive mapping assumes a unit of mapping. Some systems use the obvious phone unit, while others map an entire word or phase. SDC has taken an intermediate approach; words are mapped a syllable at a time. Reasons for this choice are given, as well as a preliminary evaluation of its success.
