A procedure is presented for calculating the damping effectiveness and quality factor for a tubular damping device that has application in rotary machinery. The design utilizes a split sleeve tube inserted inside a slightly larger tube that needs to be protected from vibration damage. The mechanism of energy dissipation for this damping design is primarily through mechanical work rather than through friction. Using the methodology developed in this paper, various split sleeve designs are evaluated, and an optimum configuration that has far superior damping capability is presented. More importantly, engineers now have a tangible method to parametrically optimize their design in the early stages of the development process, and to minimize the scope and cost of verification tests.Copyright © 2012 by ASME |
