Popis: Edward Robinson is regarded as one of the founders of a scientific topography of biblical landscapes. His method is based on comparative Semitic linguistics and assumes that modern Arabic place names contain memories of Hebrew place names from biblical times. The article summarizes results from a research project in which archival sources were used to reconstruct how only a collaboration with Arabic intellectuals and carriers of topographical knowledge mediated by American missionaries in Lebanon enabled Robinson to obtain a linguistically correct basis for his research method. In addition, links to Germany are discussed with regard to the inspiration for Robinson’s research method and with regard to the embedding of his research results in the format of a modern map.
