quantify it.Registration of images is a commonly encountered problem in image processing applications. Examples of suchapplications are, remote sensing,5'13 motion detection,'1 and medical imaging.'2'15 In all of these applicationsregistration is a necessary step before higher-level image analysis. Elastic registration of contours is a specialcase of the image registration problem. In this problem contours which are one pixel wide are available and theirpoint-to..point registration is required. One of the main difficulties when applying previously reported elasticregistration algorithms to this problem is that the deformations we encountered were severe. In other words thecontours of videostroboscopic data undergo severe shrinking and ezpension due to the large motion in the vocalfolds.Recently, powerful but computationally expensive combinatorial optimization algorithms have been appliedto this problem. The complexity of these algorithms explodes exponentially with the problem size. The problemyields a non.convex functions with multiple local minima that has to be optimized.
