Calculations based on an approximate material balance model of the Baltic Sea show that the difference between the input and output of 90Sr and 137Cs transported with water is similar to the amount found in the sediments. The agreement is better for 137Cs than for 90Sr. The inventories of 239,240Pu, 137Cs and 90Sr show that about 99, 50 and 10% of each nuclide, respectively, was found in the sediments at the beginning of the 1980s. The accumulation of the radionuclides in the sediments can be explained by assuming a mean contemporary sedimentation rate of about 1 mm year−1. |
