Popis: Lidocaine was developed as a local anesthetic in 1943, and the earliest report of pain relief was published in 1961. This medication blocks sodium channels, which are part of the pain pathway. This makes lidocaine a useful adjuvant analgesic. Lidocaine infusion can result in decreased pain as well as decreased opioid requirements. Most institutions have adopted dosing that includes a bolus dose of 1–3 mg/kg administered over 10–20 minutes followed by an infusion of 1–2 mg/kg/hr for pain management. Patients can be transitioned from lidocaine to mexiletine if an oral agent is desired because mexiletine has a similar mechanism of action.
