This paper discusses the use of statistical filtering techniques in sidescan sonar image processing. A brief review of the objectives in processing sidescan data is given.The median root median methods for filtering are rejected in favour of a novel evolution of these strategies: the datasieve and root datasieve, which offer enhanced performance as a prefilter prior to edge detection. They also classify objects according to their size and permit a useful class of "texture" to be defined. These various methods are applied to practical, corrupted sidescan sonar records to show how overall signal quality may be improved. |
