LIS Education and Quality Assurance System in Asia-Pacific Region Thailand: Recent Trends and Issues

Popis: In the current century more focus is on the provision of quality education to large numbers at affordable costs and it is the primary concern of developing countries to compete at global level and Thailand is not an exception. More so how to preserve diversity of practices within an international framework of quality assurance is also the need of the day. With this concept, this paper examines the concept of quality and quality assurance in higher education, an overview of Library and Information Science (LIS) education, the existing situation of quality assurance systems, guidelines, and standards in Thailand to assess the quality and also to promote the concept of best practices in the institutions of higher learning in general and more importantly in Library and Information Science Education in Thailand. In this context the existing quality assurance system in Thailand covers Internal Quality Assurance (IQA) and External Quality Assurance (EQA). The guidelines proposed by the Office for National Education Standards and Quality Assessment (ONESQA), the quality assurance framework comprising of nine components developed by the Office of the Commission of Higher Education (CHE), and Thai Quality Framework (TQF) have been explained. An outline of quality assurance practice in LIS education in Thailand has been presented. The quality assurance issues and the criteria for the assessment have been described. At the end the existing situation with regard to quality assurance in Thailand has been discussed and certain measures suggested to be taken towards the realization of the quality assurance were given.
