Psychological treatments have shown to be effective in alleviating mental distress and improving quality of life for many patients, but research indicates that apart from positive effects, negative effects can also occur from psychological treatment. Some examples of such negative effects are remembering negative past events, increased anxiety during exposure, symptom increase or development of new symptoms, and stigmatization. These negative effects can be transient or longer-lasting. Not much is known about negative effects of psychological treatment and whether these effects have an impact on treatment outcome. The current study aims to examine the association between negative treatment experiences and treatment outcome. It is hypothesized that patients experiencing more negative effects will show a less positive treatment outcome. This would indicate the importance of monitoring for negative effects occurring during treatment as a way of identifying patients at risk of benefiting less from treatment and intervening in order to change this potentially negative treatment trajectory. |
