Aprocedure using computer vision and fluorescent dye was developed to evaluate the uniformity of chemical application in a grain auger system. The dye was used to represent fungicide applied to the surface of the corn for suppression of molds during storage or low-temperature drying. A vision sensor was used to measure the extent of coverage on each kernel in a sample. The application parameters studied were nozzle type, number of nozzles, nozzle placement, and corn flow rate. Treatments applied at the conveyor boot provided greater median coverage than did treatments applied at locations along the conveyor tube. Hollow cone nozzles provided better coverage than did fan nozzles. No significant trends were noted for multiple nozzles. Corn flow rates between 50% and 65% of auger capacity tended to give the best coverage. |
