A centrifugal-pump-driven device was built to rapidly dispense agar-based wheat germ diet into cups (up to 150/min) for a multiple-insect-species rear-ing program. An adjustable electronic timer and a solenoid valve control the amount of diet that goes into each cup. The dispenser is mounted on casters and can be rapidly moved from one station to another, and the diet is discharged by a nozzle at the end of a 1.8 m (5 ft)-long hose. These features, coupled with the use of a high temperature-short time diet sterilizer and filtered room air, allowed the rapid filling of cups with diet and the rearing of a wide range of insect species under sanitary conditions. |
