Double-clad (DC) active fibers are indispensable for modern high-power fiber lasers because they allow pumping of the active single-mode fiber core with small cross-section through the multi-mode inner cladding with large cross-section. To improve the pump efficiency, it is necessary to break the circular symmetry of the inner cladding and one of the possibilities is to make the inner cladding shaped. CO 2 laser thermal processing and stack-and-draw techniques were used for preform shaping and preparation and attenuation in resulting fibers was compared. |
