Pit bulls are stereotyped as aggressive, dangerous dogs; breed-specific legislation has been passed in various municipalities across the U.S. (and in many countries around the world) banning ownership of pit bulls. Pit bulls are also stereotypically associated with Black Americans. Some researchers have argued that breed-specific legislation banning pit bulls is actually an indirect form of racism designed to prevent Black individuals and families from living in predominantly White neighborhoods. An initial study conducted by the present research team showed that pit bulls paired with Black adoptive owners were rated as more aggressive and less friendly than pit bulls paired with White adoptive owners. The purpose of the present study is to replicate this observed effect with a larger, more representative sample, and to determine whether ratings of dog-owner combinations are associated with racist attitudes. |
