Popis: The Ling long was published in Shanghai between 1931 and 1937. It tried its best to construct the new woman by using the articles which were written by female authors and the pictures of women. The magazine contained sections on sports, practical knowledge for everyday life, beauty, children`s health, movies and advice. The magazine`s goal was to “enhance women`s beautiful life, and advocate refined entertainment in society.” The Ling long provides access to the voice of The Chinese Modern girl: how she thought about modernity, how she perceived women`s liberation. The discourse of Beauty shows Modern beauty was meant to liberate women from traditional customs, the practice of Modern beauty became a new form of The New Women. Through the pursuit of The beauty, The New Women want to obtain women`s liberation. However nationalism was a dominant theme in modern Chinese history. The modern girl who had modern women image of femininity, was a threat to Chinese nation-building. Woman`s body reflected the uncertain status of women as national subjects.
