I did not know what to do at first, so I called Ed Kirkeby, Adrian’s partner and the manager of the California Ramblers. He told me that he had the I. J. Fox (the furrier) radio program signed for thirteen weeks on WMCA, and asked me if I would like to do it. I said, “Yes.” He told me that I would have to join Local 802, Federation of Musicians in New York. So I arranged for a test and, on the appointed day, went to 802 with my alto sax. The board had arranged to have me play some music which was on a music stand in the room. With the board listening, I delved into Mendelssohn’s Spring Song, which was on top. I had known this selection and started to play it with ease. Suddenly one of the members called out, “Stop!” |
