Popis: The ackee has great socioeconomic importance to Jamaica, providing vital employment opportunities, so the import alert (ban) on its importation into the United States in the 1970s due to safety concerns was a significant blow. This chapter discusses the efforts made by Jamaica and the United States to overcome the market access challenge, which resulted in the lifting of the import ban in 2000. The activities and approaches initiated by the Jamaica Exporters Association (JEA)-led public/private partnership and the Jamaican Ackee Task Force to meet the requirements of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for removing the import alert it had imposed on ackees, are detailed. Also detailed are the approaches undertaken by the FDA and the scientific effort required to support the process in both countries. This process, as well as leading to the removal of the import alert, had many other benefits to both Jamaica and the United States, and can serve as an example for future approaches to such trade challenges.
