Popis: It is a truism to say that, in the eighteenth century, farming as practised by the common man was, like any other trade or craft, learnt not from books but by experience and observation. But, as is being increasingly shown, the common man, especially from the later seventeenth century on, was by no means entirely cut off from the world of print. This paper, concerning itself solely with the province of Ulster in the eighteenth century, sets out to answer three basic questions.
