Popis:	The modifications of the surface mechanical properties of ceramic materials by energetic ion bombardment are summarized. By reviewing selected experiments the relationships between these property alterations and the ion beam modified microstructure and the generated surface stresses are discussed. Conclusions concerning the possible mechanisms underlying the change of the mechanical properties during ion implantation are presented.
