Popis: The Upper Pliocene-Pleistocene volcanic and plutonic rocks in the basins of the Chegem and Baksan rivers in the North Caucasus are interpreted as parts of a single magmatic system with an age of 2.8-3.0 Ma. At that time, a large caldera was produced in the upper course of the Chegem; layers of its rhyolitic tuffs are of considerable thickness even as far as 50 km from the source. The similarity in composition and age of the rocks constituting the caldera to the intrusive in the Chegem and Baksan basins suggests that they are parts of one large ore-magmatic system, similar in type to the magmatic system of the molybdenum-bearing Questa caldera complex of New Mexico.
