Prebiotics play a significant role in maintaining the homeostatic immune function of the gut-associated lymphoid tissue. Fermentation of prebiotics by beneficial intestinal bacterial strains produces short-chain fatty acids which play a significant role in maintaining the integrity of intestinal mucosa. The effects of prebiotics and synbiotics in modulating gastrointestinal and liver diseases have been studied, especially in inflammatory bowel disease, irritable bowel syndrome, antibiotics-associated diarrhea, travelers' diarrhea, and hepatic encephalopathy. Conflicting results of these studies are attributed to different effects of different types and doses of prebiotics. Future research is warranted to confirm these beneficial effects. |
