Popis: The study aims to identify effective instructional strategies that improve reasoning about sample and sampling distributions. We compare two conditions in which (a) a group first receives direct instruction via verbal and pictorial information and then attempts solving graph problems followed by feedback (direct instruction group) versus (b) the other group which first attempts solving graph problems followed by feedback and then explore the answer through interactive simulations and self-explanation prompts (inquiry learning group). We later measure learning gains separately for isomorphic (graph questions similar to that of the subjects are trained on) and transfer (word problems + a graph question the subjects were not trained on) questions. Eventually, we aim to further our understanding of the effects of different instructional strategies on learning and transfer for learners with different levels of prior knowledge.
