Popis: | Yellow-pan aphid traps were used in conjunction with symptom counts of maize dwarf mosaic (MDM) in sweet corn to determine that increasing levels of infection were a function of increasing populations of Rhopalosiphum maidis (Fitch). Trapping studies at 3 diverse locations over 2 yr indicated that early season populations of R. maidis in sweet corn fields were sufficiently high to introduce and spread the virus. Sweet corn planted in the Hudson Valley prior to June 10 showed minimal levels of infection and no yield loss due to the disease. Plantings after this date showed progressively higher levels of infection and lower yields. The plant morphological character most responsible for yield losses was barrenness. |
