Popis: Since natural rights are essentially a kind of ethical concept, this chapter looks into the problem of defending ethical concepts from a metaphysical realist perspective. In this framework, human nature plays the central role in determining ethical norms. In this connection such notions as essentialism as presented by Martha Nussbaum are contrasted with our own understanding of essences. In addition, Hilary Putnam’s objections to metaphysical realism through practices rather than essences is examined as well. We conclude by suggesting that metaphysical realism remains a viable alternative grounding for ethics and that a naturalistic ethics is thereby feasible.
