RADIATION (no matter photon, electron or other) is being used as a treatment for patients for more than a hundred years. Due to radiotherapy, invariably both pathological and healthy tissues are damaged to a certain extent. Pathological structures are supposed to be more vulnerable to radiation. Successful therapy means the targeted tissues are completely destroyed. Normal tissues suffering less and reversible damage. It has always been the basic principle of Radiation Oncology to apply maximum radiation to the pathology (malignancies in majority of the cases) and to put maximum effort to save the surrounding normal tissues. As a result of technical developments, today radiation can be concentrated to the affected tissue with high precision in any part of the human body, no matter how deep the ‘target’ is located. |
