Popis: Injuries from fires are the fourth most common traumatic injury worldwide behind traffic incidents, falls, and intentional violent injuries per data from the World Health Organization. In the United States, the age-corrected death rate from fires and burn injures was 1.2 per 100,000 in 2006. Lower socioeconomic status has been associated with a significantly higher risk of burn injury in communities in the United States and approximately 90% of burn-related deaths occur in low or middle-income countries. Large total body surface area thermal burns are associated with high morbidity and mortality as well as prolonged stays in the intensive care unit, need for aggressive support, severe pain, and associated complications. The initial and subsequent critical care management of these unstable patients necessitates continuous involvement of the intensive care team, ideally as part of a multidisciplinary approach to managing these patients’ complex injury.
